The hygger Aquarium Double Sponge Filter is an air-pump-powered filter for freshwater and saltwater aquariums, combining sponge filtration with bioceramic media to capture and break down impurities.
Keeping aquarium water filtered calls for a setup that can capture suspended impurities while also providing a surface for beneficial bacteria. This double sponge filter is designed for aquariums with shrimp, bettas, snails, fish fry and other fish, and can be used in freshwater or saltwater tanks. Its air-powered operation draws water through the filtration media; an air pump is required and is not included.
The filter uses rising air to draw water through its sponges and bioceramic balls, combining mechanical and biochemical filtration. The sponges catch impurities, while the bioceramic media provides a surface for beneficial bacteria that help decompose them. Vertical stripes increase the sponge’s specific surface area, and their perpendicular arrangement relative to the water inlet holes is designed to strengthen water adsorption.
The small model is suggested for aquariums from 10 to 40 gallons and measures 6 inches across, with an adjustable overall height from 9 to 14 inches. It is suitable for freshwater and saltwater setups with shrimp, betta fish, mackerel, snails, farmed fish fry, goldfish, crayfish, young fish and other fish species. Compare the tank capacity and available filter space with these dimensions when choosing where to place it.
Install the filter using its two suction cups or its extendable plastic hang-on clip. The components can be taken apart and reassembled, and the adjustable connections allow you to position the outlet for your aquarium setup. The water outlet pipe extends, while the T-shaped connector at the bottom can turn 360 degrees.
Remove the sponges for cleaning or replacement, and rinse them in aquarium water every 2–4 weeks. The filter comes with four sponges in total, including two spare sponges. The bioceramic balls can also be washed and reused, or replaced with other filter media if needed.
This filter suits aquarium keepers who want air-powered mechanical and biochemical filtration, adjustable installation options and replaceable media for freshwater or saltwater tanks. Its small model combines a 10–40 gallon tank recommendation with removable sponges and reusable bioceramic balls.
