Seachem Reef Iodide is a concentrated supplement for reef aquaria, formulated to restore and maintain natural-seawater iodide levels with 8,000 mg/L stabilized potassium iodide.
Iodide is an important element for reef invertebrates and soft corals, including gorgonians and sarcophytons. Reef Iodide is made for aquarists who want to replenish iodide in a reef aquarium while choosing a formula designed to keep the element in its usable iodide form.
Reef Iodide supplies iodide, the form of iodine available for uptake by corals. It is intended to help restore and maintain iodide at levels found in natural seawater, providing an important element for invertebrates and many soft corals.
Reef Iodide is complexed with a stabilizing compound to help keep iodide in that form after it enters the aquarium. Unstabilized iodide can become elemental iodine, which is biocidal, or iodate, which corals cannot use and which can be toxic at elevated levels.
This instability is why a potassium iodide source alone may not remain effective in an aquarium. Seachem formulates Reef Iodide so the iodide remains usable and bioavailable rather than converting to these other forms. The formula is also designed not to convert to toxic free iodine during storage or under reef conditions.
Reef Iodide provides stabilized iodide rather than a medicinal disinfectant. Seachem cautions against using iodine in reef systems and describes Lugol’s solution as a highly concentrated, highly toxic iodine-and-iodide disinfectant intended for disinfection.
Iodine and iodide are not interchangeable in a reef aquarium: iodine is described as toxic as chlorine, while iodide is described as as safe as chloride. Reef Iodide is formulated as a safe, easy-to-use source of iodide for reef aquarium use.
Seachem Reef Iodide suits reef aquarists seeking a concentrated iodide source for invertebrates and soft corals, especially when maintaining iodide in a usable form matters. Its 8,000 mg/L stabilized potassium iodide formula is made for reef aquaria, not for disinfection.
